Follow your curiosity
You can ask for help before you know what you like.
Start with your budget, the occasion, and a food or drink you enjoy. “I’m new to wine, and I’d like help finding something to try” is enough.
If dinner will be particularly spicy, sweet, rich, or mild, mention that. Staff can use those details to suggest a starting point; you do not have to arrive with wine vocabulary.

Your choice does not have to please every person in the same way. Guests may react differently to the same bottle, and comparing those reactions can make the evening memorable. Familiar food preferences are conversation starters, not a formula that can predict your ideal wine.
